Spine-Trees
Carved Loblolly Pine Trees, Wood preservative
Approximately 12’ x 8” x 8”
About: A series of carvings made directly into trees that have died but are still standing. Using a handheld rotary tool (dremel). Made on the Artlandia property in southern Virginia while in-residency. Inspired by the spines of whales. Trees and whales have an uncanny amount in common. So much so that I am writing a series of essays about their relationship, to be published in 2021. When complete this series will include 8 trees on this property to use as prototypes for sculptural work I would then do in other site-specific forest and non-forest locations throughout the world.
