About the work: Seven Matriarchs / First Place Women was inspired by sculpture, transformation and my own feminism. In this first attempt with transforming an object and documenting the work as photography, I took trophies of unknown winners and remade them into feminist matriarchs with materials from my studio: beads, clay, rope, paper. The object becomes the photograph, the transformation becomes the event. This led to my next attempt several months later with First Place Woman Transformed 50 Times on May 16, 2014.
This work was supported by a Project Sponsorship from Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse.
